Who needs this course and why it matters

If you are a VA-accredited attorney or claims agent, Title 38 C.F.R. § 14.629 ↗ requires you to complete specific continuing legal education (CLE) to obtain and maintain your accreditation.
  • Initial accreditation CLE: Within the first 12 months after your VA accreditation date, complete 3 hours of qualifying CLE approved by any state bar for at least 3 credits. The CLE must, at a minimum, cover:
    • Representation before VA
    • Claims procedures
    • Basic eligibility for VA benefits
    • Right to appeal

  • Ongoing accreditation (maintenance) CLE: Not later than 3 years from your initial accreditation date—and every 2 years thereafter—complete an additional 3 hours of qualifying CLE on veterans benefits law and procedure, approved by any state bar for at least 3 credits.
  • Certification to VA: After you complete the CLE, certify to the VA Office of General Counsel (OGC) as part of your annual certification under § 14.629(b)(4). Include the CLE title, date/time, and provider.
